The houses with their compact foot print are a useful addition to the already available alpine style houses and railway buildings. Architectural forms in their own style can be found right across the eastern alpine regions and far into the southwestern regions. It is assumed that the proliferation of these houses started in Bad Tölz and continued on to Berchtesgaden and via the Inn valley to Mittenwald and Garmisch-Partenkirchen from St. Johann via Kitzbühel to Matrei in Osttirol. Buildings in this architectural style can also be found further south along the old Brenner road in Sterzing Brixen Klausen and Bozen. Still today this style determines the appearance of many towns and villages. In many cases these two and three level houses are grouped around the market place or are flanking the roads leading to it. The observer will notice the typical projecting roof shapes and their often colourful facades. Shops and guest houses at the ground floor invite to linger purchase something or relax in a restaurant or coffee shop.
